The challenge was to remain positive and to have the energy to keep going.

My challenge was balancing my caring role with my personal life. I needed to know I was doing the right thing. One of my main challenges was to remain positive and to have the energy to keep going.

I was able to share my feelings and frustrations with family and close friends. I always held on to the love I had for my mum and that the disease was separate from her as someone I loved. I learnt to really cherish the wins in amongst everything else.

Something that was unexpected was the deepening love and friendship that came out of my caring for mum. I really respected and admired her for what she was going through.

I had to realize just how much I knew that helped me cope but also how much I didn’t know. I found that if I sought out information I only needed to use what was relevant at the time, otherwise you overload.

It was also really important to use your networks and trust your family to help out when needed. Ask for help and take time out when you can because you need it!!

Some of the things I do to keep going is to keep doing interesting and fulfilling things for myself like craft, food and friends.
