I left my full time job to be a full time carer

My name is Susan and I am 56 years old. I have recently left my full time job to become a full time carer for my husband. As a result of many medications he was taking for his mental health he has developed diabetes and is now insulin dependent. He also developed cellulitis and his legs were swelling into tree trunks and this meant having toes amputated. I had to learn how to put things in place for him as he lost a lot of independence through this. I organised an OT out to the house who helped him with a walker, it was her who told us that the GP might be able to help us with taxi fares to appointments due to his loss of license. I did this and asked my local GP for support. We filled out forms together which resulted in half price taxi fares. Just this one little tip took so much stress off us both financially as he eventually had so many appointments to get to and I hadn’t finished work yet so this helped us to be able manage this period. It’s amazing how much you put up with before you realise how much support there is out there.
